Comfort Food - Lasagne Sleeping Bag

A gigantic lasagne (180cm x 90cm) which has been made as a sleeping bag for the ultimate in comfort. Slip inside the bottom mincey layer and feel the full weight of the comfort on top of you.

Made out of duvets and hand dyed fabric, a long and exhausting process! The fabric for each layer was dyed (in a mop bucket in the bath) and then sewn around the duvets to create the different lasagne layers. Luckily for me my sewing machine chose just this moment to break, ugh! The mince layers have been screenprinted for maximum minceyness (after much stress about how to make it look right).

The lasagne was also taken to the doctors surgery (because nothing says nutter like turning up at the doctors with a giant lasagne) and Ben Bainbridge and Sally Hackett were good enough to get inside it for me and model its comforting potential!

Comfort Food - Penne Pasta

A large piece of hand-quilted penne pasta. You can hug it, you can squeeze it, but you can't eat it.

A Transitional Object

The outcome of a day long project in which we were each given a phrase relating to our project and asked to make an image. I decided to take the phrase literally and made a stuffed digestive system which was later sewn onto a wooly jumper. The photos were taken in Hawkhill Medical Centre, Dundee.

My glorious model is Ben Bainbridge, you should definitely check him out.

Such a neglectful blogger! The past couple of months leading on from the pasta drawings have (finally!) resulted in a clearer idea about what I'm doing in project wise, hurrah! And have resulted in me making work which I never quite expected I would do, nice that isn't it? I started of looking at literal meanings of phrases, first with 'A Transitional Object' (post to follow) and then moving on to look at literal comfort foods. I've mainly been working around the phrase 'Home Comforts' and have been looking at the ideals of folk art and crafts paired with the literal meanings. The result is: quite humorous, a bit strange and very squishy. What more could I ask for?

New Starts

After a summer of dissertation writing and working full time I'm finally back in the studio. It's been a month since we started 4th year but time has been flying by! The idea for my final year project isn't exactly concrete at the moment, the last few weeks have been spent hopping around from idea to idea, but in the mean time here are some sketchbook drawings from the last few days.

Down the Level

Over the christmas holidays I took a trip "down the level" (the level being a country lane near where I live) accompanied by my diana, a roll of slide film and a very cold mum and now, after a 2 month wait, I finally have the results! I wanted the film cross-processed in C-41 chemicals but my local jessops refused to do so meaning the film had to be sent to Edinburgh to be processed then returned to Dundee before being sent to Germany to get prints made. Thankfully I was in no hurry to get the photo's back and the colours in these were definately worth the wait.

Collection(s) Part 1

I've been working as part of the Student Curatorial Team at DJCAD this year with some other students and our first exhibition opened on Friday! It's called Collection(s) Part 1 and takes inspiration from Heidegger's theory of handiness whilst juxtaposing objects from the museum collections with art work from around the art college.

The exhibition is running until 5th of March in the Lower Foyer Gallery, DJCAD, Dundee so please come down at some point, have a browse and pick up a publication.

We also have talks from Janey Muir, Matthew Jarron and Beth Lord on Tuesday 1st March between 1pm and 2pm on the subject of 'What is a museum object? What is an artwork?'.

Who wants to build a fort?

I've been thinking alot recently about forts, dens and hideouts and how they differ from person to person. Building a fort provides the maker with comfort and a feeling of safety steming from childhood pastimes, many of which have been idealised in our minds, but which also mirrors what we try to do on a grander basis within our homes as adults. I've been considering doing some sort of fort based project in which a group of people are invited to make their own hideouts or we make one large hideout together. It's all very much speculation at the moment but if anyone would like to get involved please let me know! Similarly if you just fancy making a fort for the fun of it then feel free to head round my way with your duvet.

Another semester finished, where does the time go?!

My posts have been somewhat absent of any studio work for the last few months so here is a piece of actual illustration for once! We had a quick editorial project before assessments based on sibling rivalry and this was the outcome of mine, it's suprising the difference putting your drawing into context can make.

Despite it being a good couple of months since returning from a lovely week away in Berlin it's taken me until now to get any photos up! Partly due to being at home for summer and not having anywhere handy to get 120 film developed (paired with waiting a few weeks to get them back) and partly due to sheer laziness on my part.

Alot of the photographs I took when away either came out rather on the dull side, or didn't come out at all, thanks to me being terribly sensible and forgetting to take my flash with me but here are some of the better ones.

11th of March, how neglectful of me. Show Your Working was a great success, I even managed to sell one of my drawings!

My piece was called "Plastic Heart, Analogue Soul" and was based on the growing obsession I have with film cameras. The piece was a collection of drawings of various film cameras along with photographs that had been taken on them.

Growing Obsession

I seem to have a growing obsession with vintage cameras and my Diana. We have a personal project just now so I've spent the last couple of weeks drawings cameras then taking photos of them. I've been using black and white film then processing it myself but sadly it's been going a bit wonky. My negatives have been coming out foggy and generally a bit dodgy but I might pop in on Monday and print some anyway and see what I can do with them.

Diana

I finally got my last batch of Diana photos back from Jessops on Sunday after 4 weeks of waiting! I took them over the christmas break when it was snowing and I'm rather happy with the way they turned out. Unfortunately a few of them havent scanned properly but here are some of the ones that did.

We got given an introduction on how to use the dark room today at uni which was very, very exciting. I've ordered some black and white film so hopefully the next lot of photos I upload will be ones I've processed and printed myself!

Drawing Project

So this was the outcome of my drawing project. Although not technically a drawing I'm still quite happy with it. The flower at the bottom is a hellebore, which is a symbol of new beginings as it flowers through ice and snow. I wanted it to be a bit subversive so I used embroidery as it's seen as being "nice" yet the message is less than nice. Thankfully I do feel a bit better now that I've done it, and much better than I felt whilst doing the project.

I now have my basic cape! It's been cut and hemmed and now its time to lobster it up. A success so far although I did realise after hemming it that I forgot to pre shrink my fabric, oh dear. Hopefuly it wont be too much of a problem.

We've been doing a drawing project in the studio this week which has turned from being quite enjoyable to rather distressing. I chose a very personal and difficult subject matter in hope of gaining some sort of benefit from it. I thought it would be some sort of release and way of venting my emotion but in reality it has just made for a very unhappy week so far. I'm hoping that once I'm finished it will have the desired effect but at the moment it's definately not.

The aim:

Later on this month the 4th year illustrators are having a rock legends themed fundraiser for their degree show and I've decided to go as the one and only Karen O. After much pondering over which one of her wonderful costumes to make I've finally settled on the one that she wore on stage at Glastonbury last year.

Karen O is someone I've always had alot of admiration for - her style, music and general persona. To sum it up I think she's rather amazing.

I bought some fabric today so I can get started but I've yet to do anything with it. My costume obviously isn't going to be anywhere near as good as Christian Joy's (the wonderful designer who makes Karen's costumes) but I'm sure it will still be very fun to wear, not to mention dance in. Maybe the lobster cape will become part of my everyday wear.

My latest camera purchase arrived a couple of days ago - a Kodak Colorsnap 35 Model 2, complete with carry case! It's about 50 years old and despite not being worth very much I still think it's quite the bargain at 99p plus postage. I've not had a chance to take it for a test run yet but hopefully I'll manage to get out with it in the next couple of days.

It's been almost a week since we handed in our work for assessement and I've felt pretty lost not being in the studio. On the upside I have a lovely new Diana F+ camera to play with! I'm going through film at a rate of about 2 rolls a week at the moment but I'm still waiting in suspense to see the results. Hopefully I'll get them back soon and if they're any good I'll share them.

Interactive Wallpaper

As I was idly browsing the internet tonight I came across wallpaper that you can interact with. Now I'm a sucker for interactive art and design so I was quite taken with the idea. This wallpaper was designed by Kirk Mueller and features STD's which fade in when the user touches the wallpaper. There are video's available of the images fading in and out here. The conductive inks used can be screenprinted and used to draw with so it would be interesting to see them applied to some illustrations.

The inspiration for my piece was the line "Early porn for me was shopping catalogues". I wanted the image to be subtle and a bit subversive rather than obviously pornographic. I was also thinking quite a lot about how women are portrayed in advertising - those subtle seductive looks are enough to make people want to buy into that image and the sex appeal. There were alot of really mixed views on Grayson Perry within the class with some people being very accepting of the image he portrays with other being in complete disagreement, almost enraged. I found the article intriguing and interesting to read and it really challenged alot of stereotypes and preconceptions of gender roles, which can surely only be a good thing?

On a completely different, unrelated tangent I also drew a boredom bear on photoshop today. "Roar?" maybe its not so unrelated after all, maybe he's contemplating writing a memoir that challanges the stereotypes and preconceptions of what it means to be a grizzly bear?
